CONTRACT-FIRST PROTOCOLS

APIs Designed for Integration, Maintainability, and Growth.

No single API style is optimal for every workload. We design polyglot protocol architectures where REST, GraphQL, and gRPC each serve their ideal business and technical role.

Protocol Architecture Profile

REST (OpenAPI 3.1)

Standard HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2 resources with universal client compatibility.

Format: JSON / RFC-7807 Problem Details
Optimal Use Cases
Public enterprise developer APIs and partner integrations
CRUD-heavy domain entities with standard caching requirements
Web and mobile clients requiring straightforward debugging via standard tools
Performance & Pattern
Communication PatternRequest-Response over HTTP verbs (GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, DELETE)
Latency & SerializationSub-15ms for warm cached endpoints; standard JSON parsing overhead

Specification FormatOpenAPI 3.1 YAML/JSON with automated Swagger interactive docs
TradeoffsCan suffer from over-fetching or multiple round-trips for deeply nested resources.
ARCHITECTURAL PRAGMATISM

Independent Services. Clear Responsibilities. Coordinated Operations.

Microservices are not an automatic upgrade. We help organizations evaluate whether a well-engineered Modular Monolith or an autonomous Microservices mesh provides the right balance between release velocity and operational complexity.

Traditional Monolith

Single codebase, single build artifact, shared single database. All modules run in the same OS process.

Target Scale:Early-stage products, small engineering teams (< 6 engineers), simple domain boundaries.
Key Strengths
Zero inter-service network latency or serialization overhead
Simple ACID transactions across tables without distributed Sagas
Easiest local development setup and unified automated testing
Single deployment pipeline and straightforward operational monitoring
Operational Tradeoffs
Codebase complexity grows exponentially as teams scale
A bug or memory leak in one module can crash the entire system
Requires deploying the entire system for minor changes
Technology stack lock-in for the whole platform
When We Recommend This:

When domain boundaries are still evolving rapidly and system traffic can be comfortably served by a single scaled instance.

Recommended Starting Baseline

Modular Monolith (Recommended Transition)

Single codebase and deployment unit, but strictly separated into encapsulated domain modules with enforced internal boundaries and no circular dependencies.

Target Scale:Growing enterprise platforms (6–25 engineers), high-concurrency business systems needing clean boundaries without network complexity.
Key Strengths
Clean domain separation with clear boundary contracts and independent interfaces
Can be split into standalone microservices in the future with minimal refactoring
Single database with schema isolation per module; in-memory message bus
High performance without network latency or distributed consensus overhead
Operational Tradeoffs
Requires strict architectural linting (e.g., dependency-cruiser) to prevent coupling
Scaling remains all-or-nothing at the deployment process level
Single database connection pool shared across all domains
When We Recommend This:

Ideal baseline for 90% of mid-to-large business applications before introducing microservices infrastructure overhead.

Microservices Architecture

Independently deployable services with private databases, communicated over gRPC or asynchronous Kafka/RabbitMQ events.

Target Scale:Enterprise organizations with multiple independent engineering teams (25+ engineers), distinct scaling requirements, 24/7 uptime SLAs.
Key Strengths
Independent deployment and release velocity per team
Fault isolation: failures in notification service do not impact checkout
Targeted horizontal autoscaling for compute-heavy bottlenecks
Polyglot capability: use the optimal language (Go/NestJS/Python) per domain
Operational Tradeoffs
Requires distributed tracing, circuit breakers, and container orchestration
Eventual consistency and complex Saga orchestrations replace ACID transactions
Higher infrastructure cost and operational overhead
When We Recommend This:

When team autonomy, independent deployability, and differential scaling outweigh the operational cost of distributed systems.

EVENT-DRIVEN ARCHITECTURE

Connect Business Workflows Through Reliable Events.

Eliminate fragile synchronous HTTP call chains. Publish immutable business domain events to high-throughput message brokers where independent consumer services process data concurrently without blocking client transactions.

Illustrative Event Simulator

03. Consumer Groups
Inventory Worker

Idempotency by Design

Every event contains an immutable `idempotency_key`. Repeated delivers verify key state in Redis to prevent duplicate billing or reservations.

Dead-Letter Queue (DLQ)

Failing payloads retry with exponential backoff. If max attempts exhaust, poison pills isolate into DLQ for operator inspection without pausing the partition.

Schema Evolution

Avro & Protobuf schemas register in a centralized schema registry with backwards and forwards compatibility enforcement before deployment.

TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT & INGRESS

ENTERPRISE API SECURITY

Security and Governance Across Every API Boundary.

API vulnerabilities are a leading vector of enterprise data breaches. We implement defense-in-depth security architectures that protect data at rest, in transit, and across every inter-service hop.

OAuth2 & JWT Token Claims

Stateless RS256 signed access tokens carrying user scopes, role permissions, and tenant isolation identifiers (`x-tenant-id`).

Mutual TLS (mTLS) Service Mesh

Zero-trust pod-to-pod encrypted communication enforcing dual cryptographic handshake across internal microservice boundaries.

Hashed API Keys & Scope Boundaries

Secure B2B developer API key issuance stored via SHA-256 hashes with granular read/write permission scopes and revocation controls.

Automated DTO Schema Sanitization

Strict payload validation using NestJS ValidationPipe and Zod, stripping unknown properties to prevent mass assignment exploits.

Immutable Audit Logging

Every authenticated state mutation records user ID, IP address, timestamp, and W3C trace ID in append-only audit datastores.

Lifecycle & Deprecation Governance

Enforcing semantic versioning (`/v1`, `/v2`) with Sunset and Deprecation HTTP headers before terminating legacy endpoints.

DISTRIBUTED DATA PATTERNS

Coordinate Business Data Across Independent Services.

In a microservices architecture, services own their databases. To avoid fragile distributed two-phase commits, we implement the Transactional Outbox pattern and Saga orchestrators with automated compensating rollbacks.

Interactive Saga Failure & Compensation Scenario

Multi-Service Transaction: OrderPlacementSaga

Payment Failed Scenario Demo
Step 03: Payment Service

Authorize Payment Transaction

State: compensated
Forward Transaction Action

Execute credit card / corporate credit line charge via payment gateway API.

Compensating Rollback Action

Trigger refund API call / credit void to restore client credit limit.

Execution Result: Payment Gateway returned `CARD_DECLINED_INSUFFICIENT_FUNDS`. Saga orchestrator initiates rollback.

The Transactional Outbox Pattern

When an entity updates, never publish directly to Kafka in the same HTTP handler. Network failures during the Kafka call cause dual-write inconsistencies. Instead, write the event into an `outbox` table inside the same local database transaction. A Change-Data-Capture (CDC) worker (Debezium) tails the database WAL and streams events reliably with zero data loss.

Idempotency & Distributed Locks

Distributed networks can deliver duplicate messages due to timeouts and network re-tries. We ensure every consumer operation is idempotent by tracking client-provided `Idempotency-Key` headers in Redis with atomic `SETNX` locks. Repeated requests return cached historical results rather than executing duplicate database mutations.

RESILIENCE ENGINEERING

Design for Failure. Build for Recovery.

In distributed systems, networks will fail, disks will saturate, and services will crash. We engineer automated circuit breakers, exponential backoff with full jitter, and bulkhead thread pool isolations so partial outages never become catastrophic system-wide failures.

Interactive State Machine Simulator

Resilience Pattern: CircuitBreakerPolicy

Current State: OPEN58.2% Failure Rate (Tripped)
Sliding Window: 10s

Downstream microservice failure rate exceeded 50% threshold over 10-second rolling window. Circuit tripped to prevent cascading thread pool exhaustion. Requests fail fast with cached fallback response.

Traffic Handling: Fast-Fail Immediately (Return 503 / Cached Fallback)
Backoff Jitter: Full Exponential + decorrelated
01. Bounded Retries

Exponential Backoff & Jitter

Retries without random jitter cause the "thundering herd" problem, re-saturating recovering servers. We enforce decorrelated jitter to smooth traffic bursts.

02. Bulkheads

Resource Pool Isolation

Isolating HTTP thread pools and database connection allocations ensures that high latency in reporting queries cannot exhaust checkout worker threads.

03. Strict Timeouts

Fail-Fast Latency Budgets

Every inter-service gRPC and REST call has a strict timeout budget (e.g., 250ms). Requests that exceed budget abort cleanly rather than tying up sockets.

04. Health Probes

Liveness & Readiness Probes

Kubernetes readiness probes test database connectivity and cache availability before shifting ingress traffic to newly booted service pods.

ZERO-BLINDSPOT SRE TELEMETRY

Understand Your Distributed Systems End to End.

In microservices, debugging across service hops without distributed tracing is impossible. We instrument OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Grafana Loki across every boundary to correlate traces, logs, and metrics under unified W3C span IDs.

PERFORMANCE & SCALABILITY

Engineer Backend Systems for Real Workloads.

High concurrency requires disciplined engineering, not guesswork. We profile every query, optimize connection pooling, and decouple compute bottlenecks so your APIs remain responsive during traffic surges.

Step 01

Measure

Establish realistic baseline throughput and latency curves using k6 and Locust script suites simulating production traffic profiles.

Step 02

Analyze

Profile CPU bottlenecks, database sequential table scans, Redis key evictions, and microservice thread pool locks.

Step 03

Optimize

Implement L1 in-memory LRU + L2 Redis caching, PgBouncer connection pools, keyset cursor pagination, and payload compression.

Step 04

Test

Execute stress testing beyond 3x peak load, inject network latency, and trigger pod failovers to verify system resilience.

Step 05

Validate

Audit p50, p95, and p99 latency guarantees against agreed Service Level Objectives (SLOs) before production cutover.

Multi-Tier Caching Strategy

We deploy two-tier caching: ultrafast local process memory (L1 LRU cache) paired with centralized Redis clusters (L2 cache) using cache-aside patterns and event-driven cache invalidations via Kafka.

PgBouncer Connection Pooling

Direct microservice connections can exhaust PostgreSQL process memory under sudden concurrency. We place PgBouncer pools between pods and databases to multiplex thousands of client sockets across minimal active connections.

Horizontal Pod Autoscaling

Stateless service instances autoscale dynamically based on custom Prometheus metrics (e.g., HTTP request backlog and Kafka partition consumer lag) rather than lagging CPU metrics alone.

KNOWLEDGE BASE & FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About API & Microservices Architecture.

Detailed answers from our principal distributed systems engineers on protocols, eventual consistency, Kafka topologies, and monolith modernization.

REST over HTTP/JSON is the universal standard for public and partner APIs due to widespread caching, tooling, and browser support. GraphQL enables web and mobile frontends to request exact data shapes across multiple entities in a single round trip, avoiding over-fetching. gRPC uses HTTP/2 and binary Protocol Buffers to deliver up to 7x faster serialization and 60% smaller payloads, making it the premier choice for internal, service-to-service synchronous communication in a microservices mesh.
